Denmark Journal, handbound

2017 Graphic Design Study Abroad

I love to work with my hands! As a spontaneous independent project, I decided to craft a travel journal for myself to record my adventures, learning experiences, and studio tours throughout my 2017 study abroad trip in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Using a large sketchbook I purchased from the local craft store, I cut, folded, and sewed the pages into signatures, which were then bound together into a single text block. Using the sketchbook’s hardboard backing, I cut 3 pieces to use as the book’s front, spine, and back panels. These panels were then glued to the styled fabric, and finally, to the text block end pages. As a last touch, I cut construction paper into a Danish flag-shaped stencil and spray painted the flag onto the front cover.

Printing & Bookbinding

This was a final project for a multimedia course I took at Oregon State University, 2017. In it presents family photographs I collected and assembled to show the growth of my relationship with my brother as we aged together, fashioned like a vintage photo album. Through this project I learned how to properly print booklets with attention to content order and orientation using Adobe InDesign; to create text block signatures and saddle stitch them together (among other physical skills required for production); and presenting the material into a concise visual story. The book’s exterior is encased in genuine red leather with a silver foil stamped title.

Enchanted Forest

Documentary Photography

This project was completed for my Documentary Photography course at Oregon State University, wherein the entire term (~4 months) was dedicated to visually documenting a specific yet unique location or institution. As it so happens, my family has long owned and operated Oregon’s famous quirky amusement park, Enchanted Forest.

Like many Oregonian children, this place was my childhood, but in a much more special, intimate way; my mother used to take me and my friends here every summer to ride rollercoasters while she visited with family in their private offices. So naturally, I chose to document (and had easy access to) this curious fairy tale theme park, how it operates, and the maintenance required for upkeep. By end of term, I presented my photographs within a magazine booklet. It was fall, so the park was closed for the season which provided me a people-free environment creating an eerie, deserted atmosphere throughout the final product.
